About the "Tang-Flower" (唐花) motif
The Tang-Flower pattern (Tang Dynastic Flower Design) is a decorative motif widely known in East Asia. It is cherished as "Kusabana Karakusa" (草花唐草) in Japan and Korea, and is also called "Fanlian" (藩蓮) in China. Its origin is considered to be West Asia (around Syria), and it features a continuous design of curved vines and small flowers, inspired by wild vines native to Central Asia.
It spread to Asia, Europe, and Africa in the 7th century with the expansion of Islamic culture, and later evolved into a symmetrical continuous pattern by fusing with the Indian lotus flower motif. It arrived in China during the Northern and Southern Dynastasties period with the introduction of Buddhism, and significantly developed during the Tang Dynasty. It spread to Japan when Japanese envoys to Tang China brought it back, which is the origin of the current name "Karakusa-mon." The plant that served as the motif's origin is believed to be the passionflower (Passiflora caerulea).
