We previously covered common mistakes beginners make, but for those just starting out in tattooing, you likely have the same questions: "Which is the best tattoo machine?" or "Which machine should I start with?" You're probably not alone in feeling hesitant. If you know any tattoo artists, they'll tell you how important the machine is. But specifically, what kind should you choose? In this blog, we'll discuss what beginner tattoo artists should consider before purchasing a tattoo machine set.
Two Basic Machine Types
Before considering brands, prices, and quality of tattoo machines, you should understand the basic types: coil machines and rotary machines. Both were invented in the late 90s, but rotary machines were not very popular at the time due to the technology available.

Coil Machines
Coil machines are classic tattoo machines. They are powered by the rapid on-off switching of an electromagnet due to the alternating current of electromagnetic waves passing through coils. This causes a spring to move rhythmically, making the tattoo needle strike the skin.

Features of Coil Machines
Coil tattoo machines allow you to see all parts from the outside, making it relatively easy to understand how the tattoo is being applied to the skin. Since all parts are visible, it's also easy to identify the cause if something goes wrong with the machine. Because the machine's structure is relatively straightforward, the ability to repair it yourself can be seen as a positive point.
On the other hand, a downside is that the machine is heavy. Because it uses heavy metal coils and magnets, the strain on the wrist during tattooing can be quite significant. Unfortunately, a certain number of artists reportedly develop carpal tunnel syndrome, where nerves in the muscles and bones are compressed, causing numbness and pain.
Additionally, because they use traditional tattoo needles, attaching them to cartridges is relatively difficult, the exposed coil power generates noise, and adjusting the stroke requires practice. These aspects reveal the undeniable inconvenience of coil machines.
Rotary Machines
Rotary tattoo machines have a built-in motor, allowing artists to adjust its frequency with the push of a button. With motor control, there's absolutely no worry about uneven color. They are lightweight and easy to hold, and tattoo pens come in various brands, with new versions being released every year.

Features of Rotary Machines
Because they have a built-in motor, there is very little noise, and they are lighter due to the absence of excessive metal parts. This reduces the strain on the wrist compared to coil machines. Since rotary tattoo machines use tattoo cartridges, you can quickly change needles as needed for linework, shading, and other situations. Additionally, many types have a separate battery, which is a major advantage for portability.
Their main characteristic is the integration of new features such as digital screens, magnetic batteries, and multiple power ports. In recent years, it's also been possible to upgrade functions with apps and accessories, so be sure to check out various types of rotary machines.
Summary
Tattoo machines have changed significantly since their emergence in the 90s. They have become lighter, more stable, and boast many convenient features. Some artists may still use coil machines. However, technology continues to advance every year. As evident from the above, wireless rotary tattoo pens surpass coil machines in many aspects, delivering more stable performance. If you want to understand the structure and mechanism, or are drawn to a retro type, coil machines are recommended. However, for a first tattoo machine, a rotary pen type is still the best choice.
At FLAG TATTOO SUPPLY, we have both coil and rotary machines! Please consider them!
